Think about how broad your options are just by visualizing the places to find your first job. There is no other way to start building your career but by make a first impression through writing a perfect resume. Here are some tips on how to write your own resume:

* Before writing your resume, you have to take into consideration the type of job you are applying for. Think of specific keywords that your employer might search in your resume. Some general keywords you can include are:

- Ability to (uphold, delegate, supervise, etc.),

- Analytical ability, - Detail oriented, - Problem solving skills,

- Results oriented, - Communication skills, - Team leader, etc.

* Do the following on your resume:

- Create a positive first impression. Showcase your communication skills and make sure your resume is easy to read. You won't have another chance to impress the employer some other time so better do it right the first time.

- Tell who you are. Inform the reader your most prominent qualifications and why they should hire you for the job. There's no need to lie though. Most employers prefer an honest resume to avoid having impossible expectations.

- Describe what you have learned. If you have no work experience or just a fresh grad, it is best to highlight courses and projects applicable for the job you are applying for.

- List your accomplishments. Do not be modest at this point. Show your employer the achievements and awards you have acquired in the past and list them down accordingly.

* After writing your resume make sure to:

- Adjust and edit as needed

- Print out the resume and see how it would look to your employer

- Bring your resume whenever applying for a job

After writing your resume, do not limit yourself to just one job application. Give yourself options. It's a big wide world and there are a lot of places to start your career. Resumes - How to Be the Unicorn of Resumes!

At my son's birthday party last week, the entertainment consisted of making stuffed animals.

They had a choice of making a monkey, a bear, a puppy, a lamb, or... a unicorn. The adult in charge held up each animal in turn and asked who wanted to make that critter.

The unicorn was last. When he held it up, several little girls raised their hands so enthusiastically that they almost levitated off the seat. The looks on their faces was priceless; they were so excited, it might as well have been their birthday.

That's how you want the reader of your resume to be when they read about you!

It's a sad fact, but 99 percent of resumes stink. The good ones are rare and elusive - just like a unicorn.

The best way to make your resume stand out is to know your own strengths and talents:

1. What are you really good at?

Your greatest success is going to come from using your natural talents and personality on the job, so it's vital to convey them on your resume.

When was the first time, in your life, you received praise for doing something well?

What activities do you like to do, that also produce results you're proud of?

When you start a new project, what parts do you look forward to?

2. When did you use these strengths and talents on the job?

Now think of a time when you demonstrated that on the job. Make it real with numbers - of dollars, customers, or dates.

"Top salesman with $1,000,000 in gross sales"

"Able to analyze 8 gigabyte log files and determine root cause of errors"

3. Highlight these strengths in your resume.

Add the success stories to your resume, then determine which accomplishments (two or three maximum) you're most proud of. Take these accomplishments and mention them in your Summary Section. (They'll be in two places: the Summary Section and in the Job Experience section.)

Newspaper Response Cover Letter

I've had many people email me and ask how to write the ultimate response to a newspaper ad. This process is actually quite easy.

Setup

Like all cover letters, be sure to have your address in the upper left corner. Then have the recipients address below this.

Salutation

Because you do not know the recipient's name, I recommend using "Dear Sir/Madam," as the salutation

Body

For the main body, keep it simple. Always have the first sentence state where (in what newspaper) you saw the ad. Then simply state that your resume is attached or enclosed.

That's it! For the remainder of the cover letter, just write it as you would write any other cover letter. Feel free to look at some of my other writings to see other examples of what a cover letter should look like. You may also make reference to the cover letter below.

Cover Letter Example - Newspaper Ad Response

Below is a simple example of a great cover letter. Not so hard, eh?
